This is Hello Kitty, the famous icon from Sanrio. It has been around even before I was born.

What does she look like to you? A cat, right? I thought so, too. She looks like a cat but she is not one! Hello Kitty is in fact a little girl. I am not really a fan of Hello Kitty but I was still surprised upon knowing that she is not a cat.
Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii who was organizing an exhibit for Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary, was corrected by the people from Sanrio after referring to Hello Kitty as a cat in her script.
“I was corrected — very firmly. That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

Although both are different, they look the same to me. Look at Kitty White! She even have whiskers! Oh well, she is a cartoon anyway. In cartoons, anything is possible.
Some other facts that you might not know about Hello Kitty:

I just read in an online article that Hello Kitty is indeed a cat. But not your regular cat. She is a personification of a cat, made in a motif of a cat. Read more about it here.
